In 1991 Calvary Chapel Rancho Santa Margarita saw its beginnings on the banks of Rancho Santa Margarita Lake with just a few people sitting on blankets. Since then Calvary Chapel Rancho Santa Margarita has steadily grown moving from one location to the next bringing us to our current location at the corner of Avenida de las Flores and Avenida de las Banderas. Pastor Gary Kusunoki who was called of the Lord to another ministry originally founded Calvary Chapel Rancho Santa Margarita. Pastor John Kanno served under Pastor Gary as his associate pastor for three years and became the senior pastor when Pastor Gary moved on.

Pastor John is originally from Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa where he received training at the School of Ministry and served as a counselor, worship leader and teacher of home fellowships. Pastor John stepped into full time ministry being sent by Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa as a missionary to Mexico where he served for 6 years and received his ordination. After serving in Mexico he was led to serve at Calvary Chapel RSM serving as the associate pastor for 3 years after which he became the senior pastor of the church.
